There is something special about watching life around a birdhouse – from the first tentative visits to the sound of chicks in the nest. The selection includes classic nest boxes, open nests and decorative birdhouses made from materials including wood, wood concrete, wicker and ceramic. The most important thing is that the house suits the birds and the spot in the garden where it will hang.

Wildlife World artisan birdhouse - Tahera€26.95Which entrance hole size is suitable for the birds?
A birdhouse can provide a home for an entire breeding season, but the entrance determines which birds can use it. Some nest boxes for tits have a hole of around 28 mm, while many boxes for great tits and tree sparrows have a 32–33 mm hole. Starlings and owls need larger or differently shaped entrances, while open-fronted nest boxes have no round entrance hole at all. Therefore, always give more weight to the species specifications and dimensions of the product than to the appearance of the birdhouse.
Which material and location should you choose?
Wood has a classic look, while woodcrete is heavy and stable; wicker, ceramic and metal require different placement and care. A model that can be opened is easier to empty of old nesting material after the breeding season. Hang the birdhouse securely and out of reach of predators, and protect the entrance from strong, direct sunlight and driving rain.
