Doormats

The entrance sets the tone for the home, but it must also be able to handle wet shoes and everyday dirt. Doormats made from coir, nylon, vinyl and washable textiles tackle the task in different ways, while shoe trays collect water and grit. The category also includes bath mats, where softness, backing and safe placement are most important.

Doormat, bath mat or shoe tray?

A doormat catches moisture and dirt at the entrance, a bath mat needs to work in a wet room, and a shoe tray collects water and soil beneath footwear. They serve different purposes, even when they look alike. So let the location determine the type before considering size and appearance.

Which material is right for the location?

Absorbent fabric collects moisture and fine dirt in the hallway. Nylon and vinyl can be durable in high-traffic areas, while coarse coconut fibres brush soil off shoes. A rubber or vinyl backing can provide better grip, but does not in itself make the mat suitable for rain. Always check whether it is intended for indoor use, a covered entrance or fully outdoor use.

Can the door open freely over the mat?

Measure the floor space and clearance under the door. Some fabric mats can be machine-washed; others need to be vacuumed or rinsed. Coir mats generally do best when kept relatively dry. Follow the care instructions to help the fibres and backing retain their shape.
