Birdhouses for both small and large birds

When spring begins to announce its arrival at the end of February, many birds start looking for the ideal place to build a nest. In woodland areas, diseased and old trees are often felled, even though these are precisely the kinds of trees that birds seek out, as they often have small holes and cracks. Therefore, there is often competition for the very best nesting sites - especially in residential gardens - which means that not all birds find a safe and suitable place to breed. Garden owners should therefore put up birdhouses to help birds find a safe new home. Birdhouses all year round

If you are interested in attracting more birds to your garden, it is necessary, among other things, to put up birdhouses and nest boxes. But before doing so, you should consider whether the garden provides suitable conditions for birds - otherwise, it can be extremely difficult to get them to settle in a birdhouse and build a nest.

There are said to be 3 absolutely fundamental requirements that must be met before cavity-nesting birds will settle in gardens:

• Plenty of varied food

• Enough places to hide from various birds of prey

• Good nesting sites

Cavity-nesting birds mainly eat small insects and seeds, but - in summer and autumn - they are also very fond of berries and fallen fruit. If you have plenty of berry bushes and fruit trees in your garden, you should therefore not throw away the berries and fruit, but leave them on the ground, as the birds will feast on them throughout autumn and winter. You should also assess whether there are enough evergreen bushes and trees in the garden so that small birds, among other things, can easily hide from birds of prey.

Place the nest box near bird food

Once you have purchased a birdhouse or nest box, you should place it no more than 20-30 metres from the bird food. This is because breeding birds do not fly far from the nest to find food for their chicks. You should therefore have plenty of fat balls and birdseed near the nest box, as many birds - such as the coal tit - fly back and forth more than 50 times carrying food to the chicks in the nest box.
