Coir Mats

The coarse surface of the coconut fibres traps soil and dry dirt before it gets further into the home. The mats are available with different designs, thicknesses, and rubber or latex backings, making the entrance both practical and personal. Coir performs best when suitably placed and should not be cleaned like a washable textile mat.

Can the coir mat be used outdoors?

The stiff coir fibres brush soil and small particles off the soles of shoes before they are tracked inside. Rubber or latex backing can stabilise the mat and protect the floor, but does not automatically make it suitable for prolonged exposure to rain. A covered location is therefore often best, unless otherwise stated in the product description.

How thick can the mat be, and how do you clean it?

Measure the clearance under the door to ensure it does not brush over the fibres. A new coir mat may shed loose fibres; shake or vacuum it as needed, and carefully loosen any embedded dirt. Only machine-wash it if explicitly permitted, and do not leave a damp backing resting on a delicate floor for an extended period.
