Seed Trays

Every seed starts small, but the roots soon need the right amount of space. Seed trays made from plastic or flexible FSC-certified natural rubber are available with cells in various sizes and depths, allowing the start to be tailored to the plant. Lids and self-watering can make care easier, while a small trowel helps with transplanting.

How large should the cells in the seed tray be?

Many small cells provide room for more seedlings, but also require earlier transplanting. Larger or deeper cells are better suited to species with strong roots or plants that need to remain in the tray longer. Check the tray's external dimensions if it needs to fit in a specific mini greenhouse or sit on a heating mat.

Plastic or natural rubber – and do you need a lid or self-watering?

Rigid plastic trays are easy to stack, while flexible natural rubber trays can make it easier to push out the root ball. A clear lid retains moisture during germination, and self-watering can provide a more even supply of water from below. Ventilate if there is heavy condensation, and clean reusable trays between sowings.
