In addition to the delightful atmosphere that small birds can bring to the garden, you may also be lucky enough to have other animals in your garden, such as hedgehogs, frogs, toads and squirrels. Many people have a clever bird table for the birds, which increases the number of birds while allowing them to enjoy the delicious food. To increase the likelihood of these animals visiting, you can install various aids. This could be a hedgehog house where hedgehogs can hide from predators and dogs, or take shelter from bad weather. If you choose a suitably sized house, you may even be lucky enough for a hedgehog to start a family in your garden. You can place some hay in the small houses to make them comfortable and pleasant for the hedgehogs. In addition to the delight these cute little animals provide, it is also worth remembering that they are actually beneficial animals, as their main food consists of slugs, snails and insects, which you generally do not want in your garden.
Another option for wildlife in the garden is a small frog house that can provide shelter from the heat in summer as well as during the colder months.
Feeding house for squirrels
By putting up small feeding houses designed for squirrels in the garden, you may be lucky enough to receive a visit from a squirrel or two. These houses can be hung in trees, on a wall or even on a post. It is particularly delightful if you can place the feeding house in front of a window so that you can watch it from the living room. These small rodents are incredibly entertaining, intelligent and, not least, cute to watch. Squirrel feeding houses are designed so that the food compartment can be filled with a selection of nuts and perhaps some seeds and kernels – but make sure that the chosen type of food is suitable for squirrels. The squirrel can then sit on the ledge, open the small roof and access the food, which it can smell from a great distance. Squirrels are highly intelligent and will quickly discover that there is food here. They are also very active animals and therefore quickly burn off what they consume. As a result, they need food rich in protein and fat, especially during the winter months when staying warm requires extra energy – a feeding house for squirrels is therefore an excellent solution.
