More than 100 Nordic plant species are poisonous. They contain substances that can be harmful in case of skin contact or if eaten by humans and domestic animals.

Poisonous plants and plant substances are found all around us – and sometimes in the food we eat. It is "in" to eat nature's wild plants and thus important to make sure that what you collect is not poisonous. Fortunately, fatal poisonings are rare, but poisonous plants are of great concern to many. It is therefore important to know the plants so that confusion can be avoided. Fortunately, many plant poisonings are "false alarms" - but one misstep is one too many.

In this primer, emphasis is placed on the identification of the poisonous plants in the drawing and text. The book also mentions which poisons the plants contain, how the substances work and the symptoms of poisoning. In addition, you are guided when to seek help from a doctor or at the emergency room - as well as giving instructions on possible self-treatment.

The text is peppered with interesting poisoning stories "from real life": What is poisonous honey? Why do horses die from grazing on the salt meadow? Can you commit suicide with a storm hat? What is chrysanthemum allergy? Can you overdose on herbal remedies? Can the "perfect poison murder" be found?

The author Per Mølgaard, botanist, associate professor, Ph.D. at the former Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Copenhagen, has for many years researched and taught the constituents of medicinal and poisonous plants.

Botanical artist Kirsten Tind is the master of all the well-liked and beautiful plant drawings.

The book has been prepared in collaboration with Giftlinjen.

"Poisonous Plants" is for anyone who collects plants or has young children. It is also an indispensable aid to those who professionally need knowledge about the poisonous plants: doctors, nurses, farmers, cooks, vets, consultants, horse owners, employees in daycare centers, schools, green departments, nature management etc.
